Routes

Routes have been carefully made to capture the most beautiful and main symbols of St. Petersburg. You will also see the world famous Hermitage, the Peter and Paul Fortress, Admiralty, St. Isaac's Cathedral, the Summer garden, the Cathedral Church of the Savior on Blood, the Mikhailovsky Castle and many other things.

The most popular destinations/routes are marked on the guide map. They are numbered and have the detailed description that you can print and take with you. It’s very difficult to go through all of the interest points on the route in one day but you can extend this adventure to several days or choose only the ones that are the most interesting to you.

On the museum route there are 4 major stops where you can hop on and off on motor ships:

On three of them it’s possible to switch to City Tour bus. City Tour buses go through the main streets of St.Petersburg:

  • Anthropological and Ethnographical museum of Peter the Great, the Russian Academy of Sciences, is one of the largest and oldest ethnographic museums in the world with over 1.2million of collectibles. It’s a successor of the first Russian state public museum of curiosities founded by Peter the Great in 1714.

  • Menshhikov's Palace Museum

  • The palace of the first governor of St. Petersburg, Alexander Menshikov, the associate of Peter the Great, is situated on Vasilyevsky Island. In the halls of the palace is the exhibit "Russian Culture of the first third of the 18th century". Graphic and art work from the collections of the State Hermitage recreate interiors of the first quarter of the 18th century.

  • Zoological Museum

  • The oldest zoological museum in Russia. The collection of various types of animals presented in the museum contains about 30 000 pieces and is one of the world's three largest museums.

  • Academy of Arts

  • Academy of Arts is built as a project by two architecture teachers from the Academy - Kokorinov and Delamota in 1764 – 1772. It also represents the architecture of early classicism in Russia and belongs to "exceptional objects of cultural heritage". Inside the Imperial Academy there is an Art museum, where various art exhibitions take place.

  • The ensemble of the Spit of Vasilyevsky island

  • It’s one of the most famous architectural complexes in the city. It includes the Exchange building, Rostral columns, the Exchange semicircular Square, a granite wall with parapets, descents to Neva with big stone spheres on pedestals, northern and southern warehouses, and also the buildings which are directly adjoining this ensemble from Big Neva and Small Neva: Customs (Pushkin house), Cabinet of curiosities, main building of Academy of Sciences, building of Twelve boards, etc.

  • One of central squares of the city and the architectural complex .

    The main decoration of the area - a monument to Peter I, the well-known "Bronze Horseman" not once described in the literature.

  • Saint Isaac's Cathedral

  • St. Isaac's Cathedral in St. Petersburg – an outstanding model of the Russian cult art. It is one of the most beautiful and considerable constructions not only in Russia, but also in the world.

    Decor of the cathedral includes the largest representation of the Russian paintings of the middle of the 19th century, which includes more than 150 works. Among them are the works by famous artists such as Vasily Shebuyev, Karl Bryullov, Fyodor Bruni. Over 300 statues, sculptural groups and reliefs are executed by Ivan Vitali. An important place in art and decorative furniture is played by more than 60 mosaic works of the Russian masters. One of the largest stained-glass windows in Russia with the square area of 28,5 sq.m. is of undoubted interest.

  • The Admiralty

  • One of the most known and most beautiful monuments of the Northern Capital is the gilded spike and ship. They are two of the main symbols of the city.

    The birth of the Russian fleet, the dawn of shipbuilding and sea power took place in the Admiralty. It is also a monument of early classicism.

  • One of the most beautiful architectural complexes in the world. The best Russian architects worked on its creation. The name was given after the Winter Palace have been built as architect F. B. Rastrelli’s project in the middle of the 18th century.

    The area is formed by historical and cultural monuments of federal importance: The Winter Palace, the Building of headquarters of the Guards case, the General Staff Building with the Arch of Triumph, the Alexander Column. As a part of historical center, St. Petersburg Square is included in the list of the World heritage and is a pedestrian zone.

  • The Hermitage - one of the largest art museums in the world with a collection occupying more than 350 halls. A special place is dedicated to the ceremonial interiors of the palace.

    The State Hermitage boasts the collection of over three million works of art including paintings, graphics, sculptures, handicrafts, archeological finds and numismatic materials.

  • Nevsky prospect

  • Nevsky Avenue - the main and the most known street of St. Petersburg.

    The unique architectural complex of Nevsky Avenue developed throughout 18 - the beginnings of the 20th century. Connecting the Admiralty and Alexander Nevsky’s Square, it originates at the bank of Neva, passes through the downtown and terminates at Neva.

    Today Nevsky Avenue is the center of cultural and public life of St. Petersburg. Dozens of museums, theaters, showrooms, movie theaters, restaurants, cafes, shops and hotels are located along the avenue.

  • The Mikhailovsky Castle

  • Mikhaylovsky, or Engineers' Castle, is the imperial palace, an architectural monument of the end of the 18th century. It is known as the place of murder of the emperor Pavel I. Today it is a branch of the Russian Museum with a permanent collection and an exhibition hall.

    The history of the Mikhailovsky Castle is shrouded in secrets. This residence was the embodiment of Paul’s I dream and therefore it isn't surprising that he participated in its design and has begun the construction as soon as he became the emperor.

  • Circus Ciniselli's

  • First stone stationary circus of Russia, one of the oldest circuses of Russia. In circus there take place representations and circus programs

  • Faberge Museum

  • Fabergé's museum is the private museum which basis of a meeting is constituted by the world's largest collection of works of Karl Fabergé’s firm. Nine well-known imperial Easter eggs which have huge value not only as objects of the highest jewelry skill, but also as unique historical artifacts are a part of the collection.

    Also in the museum’s collection are the works of art and craft created by the Russian masters of the second half of XIX — the beginning of the 20th century.

    The museum is located in the Shuvalovsky palace on Fontanka River Embankment. It is one of the most beautiful palaces in St. Petersburg which once belonged to the well-known noble dynasties — Vorontsov, Naryshkin, Shuvalov.

  • Summer garden

  • The summer garden, one of St. Petersburg’s symbols, has been praised by poets for hundreds of years. It is the work of art, the genius creation of the humankind. In the park of the Summer Palace of Peter the Great, exists a separate place of interest - the well-known gilded lattice of the Summer. During the summertime fountains are in function.

  • Russian Museum

  • The Russian Museum – the world's largest museum of the Russian art, a unique architectural and art complex in the historic center of St. Petersburg.

    The collection of the museum contains about 400 000 exhibits and covers all historical periods and tendencies of development of the Russian art, main types and genres, the directions and schools more than for 1000: with X on the XXI century.

  • Nikolsky Cathedral

  • The first sea cathedral which was traditionally nurturing seamen of the Russian fleet. One of the brightest monuments of Elizabethan baroque in church architecture.

  • Mariinsky Theatre

  • One of the largest musical theaters in Russia which played the leading role in formation of the Russian choreographic and opera art. The theater’s orchestra lead by V. A. Gergiev is among the best symphonic ensembles of the world. And its opera and ballet troupes are considered the strongest among domestic and foreign collectives. In the repertoire of the theater along with classical statements are the ultramodern performances of progressive choreographers and world prime ministers of modern composers.

  • Holy Trinity Church

  • Trinity Cathedral in St. Petersburg is a monument of architecture of late classicism. Its name was received by the Izmaylovsky regiment, one of the oldest in Russia. The regiment has been founded by the empress Anna Ioannovna in 1730 and is named after the village of Izmaylovskoye in Moscow area. Often the temple is called Troitse-Izmaylovsky. It is one of the most impressive in the Northern Capital.

  • New Holland

  • The island New Holland — one of the most significant historical monuments of St. Petersburg. Founded by Peter I in 1719, 16 years after the beginning of city building, it had witnessed all the main periods of the St. Petersburg history.

    There are warehouses and other economic rooms for needs of sea departments, Russia's first research center for testing ship models and scientific and technical laboratory, the naval corrective sea prison constructed according to standards of the best prisons of the European penal system and one of the country’s first radio stations. From here Vladimir Lenin addressed his famous speech about a revolution fulfillment. The leading architects and engineers of different eras have been working on creating various spaces on the island, New Holland, the island of inventors and scientists.
